Free WiFi hotspots are starting to morph into Wi-Fi hotzones also known as Municipal Wi-Fi . Hotzones can now offer access in areas ranging from downtown centers to mesh wireless networks that blanket hundreds of square miles in a city or county. Many cities are launching or have launched huge WiFi rollouts. Major U.S. cities planning to build free WiFi hotzones include San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, Miami and Portland Oregon to name a few. A number of smaller and mid-sized cities (where wired broadband access can be spotty) are also looking into or have already rolled out city-wide WiFi.
